Medical Tourism Is Rising Trend In Health, Travel Industries

People travel to other countries when they have business commitments or when going for a vacation. However,thousands of people are traveling to different countries to have have a medical procedure done. This trend is called medical tourism. Apart from enjoying the weather and food, you also spend some time visiting a surgeon or hospital. In 2007,over half a million people went to foreign countries for medical tourism.

There are various reasons why people choose medical tourism. The most obvious one is related to costs. Medical costs in western countries are way too expensive compared to medical costs in countries like Thailand, India, Singapore and Mexico. Yet patients can still get high quality treatment and comfortable travel experiences because many medical doctors in these countries are trained in Europe, the U.S and Canada.

According to research, a majority of Americas opt for treatment in other countries if they do not have medical insurance or if the medical insurance won't cover the procedure they require. If the surgery is long overdue, one may also decide to go for medical tourism. There are also some medical procedures which are not offered in the United States. In this case, one is forced to seek treatment in another country.

Several medical tourism companies have sprung up to cater for the ever increasing number of people who want to have medical procedures in foreign countries. Most of these companies sell travel packages that incorporates a health procedure as part of a vacation. So you can have a medical procedure done at a beautiful resort in a tropical destination. Some health insurance companies also offer a specialized insurance policy that can pay for health care in another country.

Common medical tourism procedures include:

* Heart Surgery
* Knee Replacements
* Plastic Surgery
* Infertility Treatments
* Dental Care

It seems that American health care providers are jumping on board as well. Recent data shows that there as been an increase in “domestic medical tourism.” A few hospitals are offering huge discounts to patients who can pay for health procedures in cash. However, it will be difficult to attract customers when other countries are offering similar services at costs much lower that the ones in the United States.

When going for medical tourism, there are some precautions you need to take. For instance,make sure that the hospital you are going to is accredited and safe. Gather some facts about the country you intent to visit. Some countries may have infectious diseases not found in the U.S. Always consult your home doctor in such cases. Your doctor at home may help you decide if medical tourism is right thing for your condition.
