Young dancers waltz through high performance day at Team Bath

A group of aspiring professional dancers attended a high performance dance day at the University of Bath delivered by TeamBath’s Wellness and Lifestyle team.

The Youth Dance Academy at Swindon Dance offers dancers aged 11 to 17 with exceptional potential from across the south west an opportunity to receive advanced training to help develop their technical, performance and creative skills – and ultimately help them achieve a career in dance.

The Team Bath high performance dance day was arranged to introduce them to a wide range of topics that they might not usually be exposed to.

It included an athlete lifestyle management session and an opportunity to look at and improve the dancers’ mental preparation for a performance. There was also a session on nutrition for and recovery from high performance dance, and another on setting personal goals.

The young dancers also took part in an Ashtanga yogo session delivered by Nicky Fossey-Lewis, Team Bath’s Wellness and Lifestyle Manager, which focussed on the development of core body strength, flexibility and muscle balance, as well as the holistic development of the dancers from a physical and mental perspective.

“Some of the issues faced by dancers can be very similar to those faced by athletes, and that’s an area in which we have plenty of experience and knowledge from working with athletes at all levels,” said Nicky Fossey-Lewis, TeamBath’s Wellness and Lifestyle Manager.

Viv Slayford, Project Manager for the Youth Dance Academy at Swindon Dance, said: “I’d like to thank Nicky and the TeamBath team for such a wonderful day.

“The students and I not only enjoyed the day but also found it very valuable,” she added. “It focussed exactly on the area that I wanted the students to start working in and planning in more depth.

“The welcome we received was very warm, we were looked after extremely well and the workshops were really clear, professional and pitched at the right level.”
