Greek forest fire death toll rises to 37

The number of people who have died in two violent fires raging in the Peloponnese in southern Greece has risen to 37, after the discovery overnight of 20 more bodies.

"Unfortunately we have received confirmation of another 10 people dead, which raises the death toll to 37," fire department spokesman Nikos Diamandis told reporters.

Among the latest victims were a mother and her four children, aged five to 15, who were engulfed by the fire on the road near the village of Mahista, along with seven other victims, police said. Three other children were among the first victims found on Friday.

Fire officials have warned that the toll could rise further as firemen and soldiers continue searching the affected zones.

The bodies discovered today were found in "cars, houses and in fields" in the area surrounding the village of Zacharo, in the southwest Peloponnese where 11 fatalities were found on Friday, they said.

On Friday,six people were perished in another fire on the Mani peninsula, in the southern Peloponnese, including four holidaymakers and a volunteer fireman who suffered heart attack. - DDNEWS
