San Diego Opera has announced today that it is seeking a motorcycle to use in its production of Wozzeck in April, 2007. Wozzeck marks the operatic directing debut of Tony Award Winner and La Jolla Playhouse Artistic Director, Des McAnuff. For this new production of Wozzeck, Mr. McAnuff has assembled a Tony Award winning team of designers including Costume Designer Catherine Zuber (2006 Tony for Awake and Sing!), Lighting Designer Howell Binkley (2006 Tony for Jersey Boys) and Set Designer Robert Brill.
For these performances of Wozzeck, San Diego Opera is seeking a working WWII era German military Zundapp motorcycle or a Russian built Ural motorcycle.
The unit will be driven onstage during the opera. The unit will be needed from April 6 through April 24 and no modifications on the motorcycle will be made without prior consent from the owner. There is also a possibility that the owner could appear in the opera as the driver of the motorcycle. Interested owners are encouraged to call Ron Allen, Director of Production, at 619.232.7636 x264.
Wozzeck is an expressionistic opera which explores the psychology of Wozzeck, a poor, powerless and oppressed soldier trying to cope with the mental persecution and torment of his superiors. Constantly berated by his Captain and the Company Drum Major, Wozzeck is subjected to food experiments by a crazy Doctor. To make matters worse, his mistress and the mother of his child, Marie, has an affair with the Drum Major who boasts of his conquests to Wozzeck. All of this culminates in a tragic course of events which result in Marie's murder and Wozzeck's death. This opera will disturb, fascinate and excite audiences in a single act of 90 tense and powerful minutes which combines theatrical sensibilities with the grandeur of opera.
Wozzeck opens on Saturday, April 14, 2007 for four performances only.
