The iPod Interfaces With Verdi

Innovative program continues San Diego Opera's commitment to incorporating new technologies.
San Diego, CA - Opera and the iPod come face-to-face in a series of podcasts exploring San Diego Opera's 2007 International Season, making the Company one of the first in the nation to offer iPod programming.

Launched just three weeks ago, and hosted by Fortuna Classical Music, the podcasts are already being downloaded across the country and as far away as China, Romania, Japan and Israel.

Two formats are available: an audio series of five short 15-minute "conversations" hosted by San Diego Opera Geisel Director of Education and Outreach, Dr. Nicolas Reveles, offers a casual and informal introduction to the 2007 International Season of Boris Godunov, Samson and Delilah, Il trovatore, Wozzeck and The Marriage of Figaro.

The second format is a video podcast of San Diego Opera's award-winning San Diego OperaTalk! programs, produced for television in conjunction with UCSD-TV, but now available for downloading to a video-capable MP3 player. Also hosted by Dr. Reveles, these 30-minute programs go into each opera at greater depth.

The San Diego Opera podcast series is free to the public and can be accessed online through San Diego Opera's website at: http://www.sdopera.com/. The very popular iTunes site also carries the broadcasts. Users of iTunes can select "podcasts" and search for "San Diego Opera." New podcasts will be added frequently, and users can have all future programs downloaded automatically by registering free-of-cost as a subscriber to the podcasts at iTunes. A home computer, or MP3 player can also play the podcasts without requiring any iPod or iTunes software.

San Diego Opera prides itself in providing the best possible service to its patrons by incorporating new technologies when appropriate. Supertitles, now standard throughout the world, were made even clearer to read through San Diego Opera's creation of a custom-designed "Digitext" system employing LED technology rather than slide projections which are still used by most US opera companies. An early investment in the Tessitura Software system fully integrated ticketing, marketing, development and fundraising departments increasing efficiency to the benefit of all patrons. "Operapedia," an in-depth reference work created by San Diego Opera and accessed by Opera Companies and opera lovers around the world, is just one of the many educational innovations on San Diego Opera's web site.

The iPod era is new, and San Diego Opera is already part of this exciting new communication system.
