Opera For A Fiver

Welsh National Opera invites the people of Liverpool to enjoy world class opera at a truly affordable price during the city's 800th birthday year

In 2007, the City of Liverpool is 800 years old and Welsh National Opera wants to give everyone a chance to celebrate by coming along to the opera at the Empire Theatre for just a fiver.

"We really want to encourage as many people as possible to come along and experience for themselves all the passion and drama of live opera" says John Fisher, WNO's General Director. "Everyone knows much more about opera than they think they do - and most people just need a chance to try it for the first time. We're confident that if you sample a production by WNO, you will get hooked!

"We're also delighted to be working with Liverpool Culture Company in the lead up to the celebrations in 2008. They are production partners on The Sacrifice, a brand new work created by James MacMillan. This is just one of three wonderful productions Liverpool audiences can experience for a fiver. The other two productions are: a new production of Cinderella with the most extraordinary sets and costumes and the evergreen Il trovatore, which has the famous Anvil Chorus in it. Come along - we can guarantee you a fantastic night out for just £5!"

Welsh National Opera has a long-standing relationship with the audiences of Liverpool. Back in 1968, the Company started touring to the city with a repertoire of opera classics. In 1983, a landmark production of Wagner's

Parsifal saw the composer's grandson Wolfgang fly in from Germany to catch the Company in action. To date, Liverpool audiences have remained some of WNO's most loyal and enthusiastic supporters and in 2007 they will get an opportunity to pay just £5 to see one of three spectacular productions by WNO.
