Combining the unlikely love story of the headstrong Elizabeth Bennet and the seemingly distant Mr. Darcy with brilliantly astute, yet remarkably unassuming observations on issues of society and class, Pride and Prejudice beautifully illustrates the wit and elegance for which Austen is most celebrated.
“Pride and Prejudice is one of the most remarkably vivid accounts in all of English literature of what it means to fall in love. With warmth and humor, Jane Austen chronicles the challenges and complexities inherent in giving oneself wholly to another person, despite the opposing pressures of class and family,” said DTC Associate Artistic Director David Kennedy. “Austen’s story is the very definition of a timelss classic and we could not be happier to be presenting Catherine Sheehy’s sparkling adaptation of it as our season opener.”
Sheehy, resident dramaturg of Yale Repertory Theater and chair of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism for Yale School of Drama, has redefined this classic novel for the modern stage. Featuring an impressive cast, including Broadway veterans Barbara Boughton and Patricia Hodges, leading regional actors Sally Vahle, James Crawford, Chamblee Ferguson, and Jessica D. Turner, Pride and Prejudice will also mark the regional debuts of seven current undergraduate Southern Methodist University students. Also making their Dallas debuts, as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, are recent Yale School of Drama graduates Kathleen McElfresh and David Matranga.
The acclaimed design team for Pride and Prejudice includes John Coyne (Scenic Designer), Katherine Roth (Costume Designer), Paul Whitaker (Lighting Designer), and Fitz Patton (Sound Designer). Choreographing this production is award-winning New York Baroque Dance Company co-founder Catherine Turocy, who is internationally celebrated for her baroque dances and period choreography at such venues as Lincoln Center and the Goetingen Festival in Germany. -- www.dallastheatercenter.org
