50 days from arrival in theaters: new Hunger Games trailer sets the stage

Hunger Games

Lionsgate has unveiled a new Hunger Games trailer for the upcoming movie, which is based on Suzanne Collins’ enormously beloved young adult novel.

For those not aware of "The Hunger Games," it a a young-adult sci-fi novel. it is the first book of "The Hunger Games" trilogy, and was originally published on September 14, 2008, by Scholastic.

The first novel introduces sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen (who will be played by Jennifer Lawrence in the movie). According to a description on Wikipedia, she "lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem where the United States once existed. This is where a government working in a central city called the Capitol holds power. In the book, the Hunger Games are an annual televised event where the Capitol chooses one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of 12 districts for a massive televised battle in which only one person can survive."

If it sounds like a youthful version of "Running Man," you'd be right. Naturally, there will be youthful romance, as well, in an attempt to bring in the same audience that went wild over "The Twilight Saga." Josh Hutcherson plays Peeta Mellark, Katniss' eventual love interest.

The "Hunger Games" trailer is supposed to be on display during the Super Bowl's pre-game, so it's not set to be screened during the actual game itself, meaning it escapes --- somewhat --- the price of such ads. While not offering 100 percent new footage from the earlier trailer (seen here), the new Hunger Games trailer does offer several new tidbits, some of which differ from the book (spoilers ahead if you didn't read the books).

The new Hunger Games trailer opens with Katniss giving sister Primrose (Willow Shields) a Mockingjay pin. She says to Prim, "As long as you have it, nothing bad will happen to you. I promise." This is a departure from the book, but actually will serve streamline the adaptation to cinema. Let's face it, books and movies make awkward translations, at times.

Time for the Reaping, where the tributes of the upcoming Hunger Games are chosen. Naturally Prim's name is called and naturally Katniss volunteers to take her place. You can see this coming a mile away without even having read the book. Katniss leaves her family in Gale's (Liam Hemsworth) care. She leaves the Capitol, where she has a pre-Hunger Games interview with Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci).

He says to her, "What did you say to your sister when you volunteered for the Reaping?" to which Katniss replies, "I told her that I would try to win for her." Flickerman answers, "And try you will," and kisses her hand.

There are then training shots and a previously seen exchange between Katniss and Peeta. The new Hunger Games trailer ends with Katniss and and her stylist Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), who affixes the Mockingjay pin to her Hunger Games uniform as a good-luck charm.

"The Hunger Games" is set to hit theaters on March 23.
