The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Foundation's "Give One, Get One" campaign was a big success last year. But it wasn't without glitches.
Basically, you pay twice the normal price for an XO-1 computer, but half of that is tax-deductible, as not only do you get an XO-1, but one is sent to underprivileged child in a developing country.
This year, the OLPC Foundation has decided to offload the handling of the promotion. Amazon.com will begin selling XO laptops under the G1G1 program in late November, around Thanksgiving.
Since last year the Foundation had production delays and shipping issues, this will hopefully make things run smoother.
The program will only be for U.S. residents, however.
XO-1 is a unique laptop with features created specifically for children of the emerging world. OLPC reports that "The XO is a potent learning tool created expressly for children in developing countries, living in some of the most remote environments. The laptop was designed collaboratively by experts from both academia and industry, bringing to bear both extraordinary talent and many decades of collective field experience for every aspect of this nonprofit humanitarian project. The result is a unique harmony of form and function; a flexible, ultra-low-cost, power-efficient, responsive, and durable machine with which nations of the emerging world can leapfrog decades of development—immediately transforming the content and quality of their children's learning."
