McCain Suspends Campaign to Focus on Financial Crisis

John McCain says he has suspended his campaign and plans to return to Washington to work on legislation aimed at the financial crisis engulfing Wall Street. At the same time, McCain has asked that the debate scheduled for Friday between himself and Democratic candidate Barack Obama be postponed.

My take on this: what, are you too old to multitask? Additionally, it's not like his campaign has truly suspended; it's just moved to Washington, D.C.

Barack Obama said the following in response, at a news conference in Clearwater, Fla:

"It's my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess. It's going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once."

The University of Mississippi, the host of the debate, said that “we expect the debate to occur as planned.”

Although McCain and Obama would both naturally be necessary if the Senate was even close to a bill, that doesn't seem to be the case here.

It almost seems to be a delaying tactic on the part of McCain, who has seen his poll numbers dropped precipitously in the last two days, although --- quite surprisingly --- not in Ohio, which has been hard hit by this crisis.

President Bush has scheduled a press conference to discuss the "bailout" for tonight at 9:01 PM EDT.
