Steve Fossett Belongings Possibly Found

A hiker apparently has found items belonging to adventurer Steve Fossett, missing since September of last year. He said he found the items at an abandoned mine near near Minaret Lake, near the town of Mammoth Lakes.

Hiker Preston Morrow said that he found an ID card with Fossett's name on it and two laminated cards. He also said he found 10 $100 bills, $5 and pieces of clothing.

Police Chief Randy Schienle said, "We're not certain that it belongs to Steve Fossett, but it certainly has his name on the ID."

Fossett made his fortune trading futures and options on Chicago markets, but is quite possibly better known as an adventurer. Examples include his 2002 solo balloon flight around the world, as well as being the first to fly a plane around the world solo without refueling, in 2005.

On September 3rd of 2007, Fossett took off in a single-engine plane borrowed from a Nevada ranch owned by hotel magnate Barron Hilton. It was strictly a pleasure flight, according to his wife.

He never returned, and despite a search by dozens of planes and helicopters covering more than a month, no trace of him was ever found.

Fossett was declared legally dead in February.
