It's been speculated for months that Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie were on the verge of divorce, and on Wednesday, the couple issued a joint statement confirming that fact.
The statement, issued to the media, said:
"Madonna and Guy Ritchie have agreed to divorce after 7 1/2 years of marriage. They have both requested that the media maintain respect for their family at this difficult time. A final settlement has not been agreed upon yet."
Speaking of settlement, according to British reports, Madonna has enlisted the services of celebrity divorce lawyer Fiona Shackleton. She oversaw Paul McCartney's divorce from Heather Mills.
Things started getting rough in July, when Alex Rodriguez's wife filed for divorce, citing Madonna as the reason for the collapse of her marriage. Madonna denied any affair with Rodriguez.
Madonna and Ritchie have been married for nearly 8 years. They have two children, 8-year-old Rocco and 3-year-old David, whom they adopted two years ago in Malawi. Madonna also has a 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from a previous relationship with Carlos Leon.
