Barack Obama canceled most of his Thursday and Friday appointments as he prepared to fly to Hawaii to visit his gravely ill grandmother. At the same time the reaction from some can only be described as hateful, disgusting and unfeeling (and that's being nice).
Robert Gibbs, Obama's spokesperson, told reporters Monday that Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, who helped raise him, had been released from the hospital late last week, but since then her health has deteriorated "to the point where her situation is very serious."
"Senator Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has always been one of the most important people in his life, along with his mother and his grandfather," Gibbs said. "Recently his grandmother has become ill and in the last few weeks her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious. It is for that reason that Sen. Obama has decided to change his schedule on Thursday and Friday so that he can see her and spend some time with her."
At the same time hate and racism reared its ugly head. It can only be that or insanity.
A commenter at Topix, when hearing the news said:
trust me, the timing is too suspicious and his grandmother had been poisoned. Like i said, obama will do anything to win the whitehouse.
That comment has since been removed.
However, over at Fox News, the conservative news site and network, the comments are even more scathing. AmericaBlog, BTW, has screenshots if the comments are taken down.
Well isn't this convenient. I guess his grandmother is suddenly useful again once he starts slipping in the polls.

Plenty more than that. At times like this, I am sad to say I am America. Negative campaigning makes us look like fools around the world. We should concentrate on issues.
And all the vitriol spewed: shows the world just how far behind we are. Among industrialized nations, we are among the most racist.
As for evidence it's racist: anyone remember similar accusations when Biden's mother-in-law ... not even a blood relative ... died? No.
