Dallas Earthquakes Continue to Shake Up Residents

Dallas earthquakes? When people think of earthquakes in the United States, they think of California. But a series of minor (to a California resident) earthquakes has residents rockin'.

While a Dallas earthquake is big news, and a major quake in California is also, residents in California, sitting right on top of not one, but many faults, are used to them.

The "outbreak" of quakes in the Dallas area began late Thursday. The first earthquake hit in the area of the Grand Prairie at 11:25 PM Central time. The quake was a 2.5 on the Richter Scale, according to the USGS.

A second earthquake followed at 12:01 AM Friday morning, 10 miles west of Dallas, near Irving, Texas. This earthquake reached 3.0 on the Richter Scale.

Typical of quakes, residents should expect aftershocks for the next few days.

The Dallas earthquakes only created minor damage, though major excitement. Texas hasn't been totally exempt from major quakes; the two largest earthquakes in Texas history are a 6.0 SE of El Paso on August 16, 1931, and a 5.8 in West Texas on April 14, 1995.

In another strange occurrence, though considered a separate incident from the Dallas earthquakes, was one in Oklahoma. A 3.1 magnitude quake was reported about 11:30 AM Thursday near McCloud, Oklahoma, approx. 180 miles north of Dallas, according to the USGS.
