The ING NYC Marathon 2008 Winners: Radcliffe, Gomes dos Santos

The ING New York City Marathon is not the most famous: arguably the Boston Marathon holds that "title." But it's still huge, drawing more than two million spectators, over 38,000 runners, 120 live bands and assorted oddball acts. It's the NYC Marathon 2008.

The 2008 NYC Marathon had repeat winners. Among the men, Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil (2:08:43) won the 26.2-mile race through the boroughs of New York City for the second time, coming from behind to pass runner-up Abderrahim Goumri of Ethiopia. Daniel Rono of Kenya was third.

The NYC marathon women's results were as follows: Paula Radcliffe (2:23:56) of England winning (her third New York City Marathon, with Ludmila Petrova, 40, of Russia second and Kara Goucher of Oregon, third.

Radcliffe is the marathon world record holder, but suffered from a stress fracture earlier in the year and struggled to simply finish the Beijing Olympic marathon.

The only woman with more New York City marathon titles than Radcliffe is Norway's Grete Waitz, who won an amazing 9 times in an 11-year span from 1978-88.

There were 38,377 "official" starters in the 2008 NYC marathon.
