We know that Wal-Mart is set to start selling the iPhone 3G on December 28th, but only today, Dec. 8th, did mainstream media pick up on it. More than that, however, a rumor raised last Thursday says that it might also sell a special $99 version of the phone. However, the only thing different about the phone will be the amount of memory, according to the report.
BGR cites the familiar "unnamed sources" that say that the world's largest retailer will sell a special edition iPhone, with 4 GB of RAM. But even BGR is skeptical; this isn't one of their normal sources, so they aren't ready to believe it just yet.
However, two commenters said that information matches info they had, as well.
And, this is the kind of pricing that makes sense for Wal-Mart. But unlike most of their suppliers, Apple needed bow to a Wal-Mart demand, so would they create a special version for Wal-Mart, and price it this low?
They might if they want to continue their expressed desire to get the iPhone into as many hands as possible. What I found funny is some of the other BGR commenters complaining about the loss of their exclusivity.
It should be noted that quite a few are discounting the $99 theory; we'll have to wait to see.
