The most popular character in X-Men, either the movie OR the comic book? Obviously Wolverine. And there's an origins movie coming out in 2009, called X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The Wolverine movie is obviously a prequel, and it includes several characters from the books, such as Sabretooth, Gambit, the Blob.
According to the IMDB synopsis:
Wolverine lives a mutant life, seeks revenge against Victor Creed (who will later become Sabertooth) for the death of his girlfriend, and ultimately ends up going through the mutant Weapon X program.
