Snowzilla Declared a Nuisance, is No More

Snowzilla is now just a memory, and unlike Frosty, he won't be back. The humongous Alaskan snowman, first erected in 2005, has run afoul of the government (meaning city codes). Horrors: more Alaskan politicking.

The picture attached to this story is from 2005, when Snowzilla was first built by the Powers family, and was a mere baby.

Seriously, Snowzilla in 2005 was 16 feet tall. Since then the giant snowman has risen higher and higher. According to the AP, he was a favorite for camera crews from Russia (we know how close they are to Alaska, a stone's throw if you believe Sarah Palin).

But the crowds he attracted made him a non-favorite in the neighborhood. And thus, Anchorage city officials have deemed Snowzilla a public nuisance. According to the city, the two-story snowman increased traffic to the point of endangerment and the snowman itself was unsafe.

So Snowzilla is now just, well, snow. The Powers family said there are no plans to rebuild. In fact, under the city's nuisance abatement order, if they try, they could be arrested.
