John Costelloe, Sopranos Actor, Commits Suicide

John Costelloe, a former Sopranos actor who played a role in a had a four-episode arc in 2006, has committed suicide at the age of 47.

Costelloe, a former FDNY firefighter, shot himself in the head in his basement bedroom on Dec. 16, reports indicate.

During the story arc, John Costelloe played short-order cook Jim "Johnny Cakes" Witowski, who was also a volunteer fireman. He had a relationship with closeted homosexual and member of Tony Soprano's mob, Vito Spatafore, who fled New Jersey after being outed.

Costello is pictured on the right in the above photo from the Sopranos.

Actor Joseph Gannascoli, who played Spatafore, was a close friend of John Costelloe.

"I was shocked when I heard, and it still hasn't really sunk in. I never detected anything troubling about him. I enjoyed all the time I ever spent with him."

Costelloe also appeared in small roles in Billy Bathgate and Black Rain, and last appeared in this year's movie Doubt, starring Meryl Streep.
