Detroit Lions First Perfectly Imperfect NFL Team 0-16

Last year's New England Patriots became the first team to finish 16-0 during the regular season. Of course, no one cares because they lost the Super Bowl. This year the Detroit Lions did exactly the opposite, finishing the season 0-16.

Yes, the Detroit Lions not only finished the season winless, they are the first 0-16 team in NFL history. The last full-schedule winless NFL season was turned in by the 0-14 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976, their first year in the league.

One can imagine an expansion team like Tampa Bay losing all its games, but the Detroit Lions are hardly an expansion team. The reason TB only lost 14 games, BTW, is that at the time a full season was only 14 games. In 1978 the schedule expanded to 16 games, giving the Lions their chance at 0-16 history.

The final game of the season for the Lions was against the Green Bay Packers, who themselves had a disappointing season. The Packers beat the Lions 31-21, finishing 6-10 for the season.

A winless season is nothing new for the Lions; they were 0-11 in 1942 campaign. In that year, depleted by WWII, the Lions were outscored by a total of 263-38.

The Packers didn't exactly destroy the Lions. The game was tied 14-all through the 3rd quarter. You can bet the Packers didn't want to be the team to allow the Lions avoid 0-16.
