Windows 7 Beta Download Goes Agonizingly Live

On Wednesday Steve Ballmer, during Microsoft's CES Keynote, announced that the beta of Windows 7 was open to developers in certain programs (MSDN, Technet, etc.). This morning, as promised, Microsoft has opened up the Windows 7 beta to anyone who wants to download it.

Perhaps I should rephrase that sentence however. Rather than being available to anyone who "wants to download it," the Windows 7 beta is available to those who can squeeze into the line and "manage" to download it.

The site is here, and you will likely get a message that says "Server is too busy" at least once.

Why the big rush? Well, only 2.5 million will be allowed to download the Windows 7 beta. Apparently Microsoft will close off the spigot after that. It's unclear if any mirrors such as FileForum will host the download, either, based on that restriction. None appear to have it so far.

Expect to have to login with your Windows Live ID, BTW. Don't have one? Well, you'll have to register, then.

There are reasons to be cautious with this software, however. First, it's beta software; you could lose data, hose your system, etc. Second, in general with such early-adoption programs, there will be issues, and it's usually a good idea to wait for the dust to settle. Finally, it's only good until August anyway (which might or might not imply a timeframe for the actual release).
