During the luncheon, Barack Obama took time to comment on the collapse of Kennedy. While the luncheon continued, Obama said:
He (Ted Kennedy) was there when the Voting Rights Act was passed. Along with John Lewis, he was a warrior for justice. And so I would be lying to you if I did not say that right now a part of me is with him. And I think that's true for all of us. This is a joyous time, but it's also a sobering time. And my prayers are with him and his family and Vicki.
Senator Kennedy was apparently taken from Statuary Hall, where the luncheon had been going on was taken out on a stretcher. Reports are conflicting, and in fact at this time two ambulances are lined up at the capital building and have not yet left.
Senator Ted Kennedy revealed last year that he was suffering from an aggressive brain tumor. However, earlier this morning Kennedy appeared at the inauguration in fine spirits and appearing well.
More details as they come in.
