Report: Caroline Kennedy to Abandon Senate Bid

Citing her uncle's illness, Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn from consideration for the vacant Senate seat in New York, according to a person told of her decision.

According to the New York Times, the person indicated that Caroline Kennedy called New York governor David Paterson and told him of her decision. Patersojn is responsible for selecting the successor for Senator Hillary Clinton, who was confirmed today as Secretary of State.

Caroline Kennedy is extremely close to Sen. Ted Kennedy, who collapsed yesterday during Barack Obama's inaugural lunch, and she feels, according to the informed person, that his health should be her priority, not senate matters.

Many were critical of Caroline Kennedy's pursuit of Hillary Clinton's senate seat, as Kennedy has never held public office.

Others who are in the running for the seat are Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, considered the top choice by voters, and Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, a second term congresswoman from the Albany area.

Paterson is expected to announce his decision on Saturday.
