Yes, septicemia, an infection of the blood, has forced doctors to amputate the hands and feet of Brazilian model Mariana Bridi da Costa, 20, former Miss World Brazil in 2006 and 2007.
Mariana Bridi da Costa first sought medical advice after feeling ill in late December. Doctors said she had kidney stones but her condition worsened.
Doctors then diagnosed a urinary tract infection that spread. She was hospitalized on Jan 3. The spreading infection had become septicemia, a generalized infection.
Her hands and feet were amputated earlier this week because the flow of oxygen to her limbs was reduced.
In addition, doctors have removed both of her kidneys and in the most recent surgery Thursday night removed part of her stomach.
Henrique Fontes, executive director of Miss World Brazil told CNN that Bridi had recently been selected to compete in a national modeling contest by the same person who discovered Giselle Bunchen (Brazilian model and Tom Brady's squeeze).
One more thing: it has been reported that Bridi has a rare blood type; doctors are asking for donations.
It is unfortunate that someone as young and beautiful, with her whole life ahead of her, a Miss World Brazil and aspiring model would be felled like this. Was it misdiagnosis that caused this, or was it simply unavoidable. Hard to say, but our hearts go out to her.
