2009 ING Miami Marathon Marred by Wrong Turn

A wrong turn marred the 2009 Ing Miami Marathon, and perhaps affected the final result, as the leader at the time went astray, following a video truck.

At around mile 20, Jynocel Basweti of Kenya, 22 was in the lead of the 2009 ING Miami Marathon. But he saw a video truck turn unexpectedly and followed the truck, which had incorrectly been ordered off the course by a police officer.

Eventual marathon winner Benazzouz Slimani of Morrocco said he also got confused and followed Basweti. However, he realized he had gone astray far sooner than Basweti, and turned around. Basweti turned around as well, but by the time he returned to the pack of leaders, he was too exhausted to climb into the lead again.

Slimani completed the course in 2:16:49 to win the 2009 ING Miami Marathon, as well as $5,000.

Basweti was runner-up in 2:18:14. He won $2,500, but race organizers gave him an extra $2,500 as a goodwill gesture.

Edward Tabut of Kenya finished third at 2:18:30.

Among the women at the 2009 ING Miami Marathon, Michele Suszek of Westminster, CO won with a time of 2:43:31. She also earned $5,000.

The men's half marathon was won by Pat Hayburn, 24, of Media, PA, at 1:11:12, and the women's half marathon was won by Suzanne Larsen, 31, of Fenton, MI, at 1:20:38.
