The Woodfield Mall in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg is currently being searched after a report of two suspicious men, one of whom may have had a handgun.
The incident started at 11:20 AM CST on Monday, when police received a call from a citizen who reported seeing the men, one of whom the citizen believed to be carrying a handgun, inside Woodfield Mall.
Woodfield Mall has over nearly 300 stores and restaurants. It is currently the largest mall in the Chicago area.
Initially, Schaumburg police put Woodfield Mall on lockdown as the suspects were initially believed to have been near Door 6, an upper level entrance in the Mall. At that time those inside were allowed to continue shopping, but no one new was allowed to enter the mall.
At this point police are moving their search outside the mall, and are looking in dumpsters and entrances. Police say there have been no reports of crimes at the mall and that the search is strictly precautionary.
Earlier reports that the Woodfield Mall had been evacuated were incorrect, and it now appears the search is winding down.
