One day after Barack Obama went to Capital Hill to drum up support for his stimulus bill, reports are that he is planning an evening get-together with House and Senate leaders, a sort of cocktail party to grease the wheels for the package.
The stimulus bill is scheduled to be voted on tonight, if all goes well. According to the New York Times, the guest list for the gather consists of the following:
Six House Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Representative Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the majority leader; and six House Republicans, including Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the minority leader and Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the whip.
Five Senate Democrats, including Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, and Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois; and five Senate Republicans, including: Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader, along with Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Jon Kyl of Arizona, John Thune of South Dakota and John Cornyn of Texas.
And no, he's not trying to get them drunk. According to the New York Post, the event is scheduled to start after the stimulus package is voted upon (it's unclear if the bill has to pass for the gathering to go on).
Seriously, though, in the House the stimulus bill can pass sans GOP support. In the Senate, because of the threat of a filibuster, the package will likely need some GOP support, which may not be forthcoming.
