Despite an impassioned plea by Gov. Rod Blagojevich, the Illinois Senate voted unanimously on Thursday to impeach him, thereby ousting him from office. The vote was 59 - 0.
At the same time the Senate voted to prevent Rod Blagojevich from holding any other office in Illinois.
In his impassioned plea, Rod Blagojevich said:
"You haven't proved a crime, and you can't because it didn't happen. How can you throw a governor out of office with insufficient and incomplete evidence?
"I'm asking you to acquit me and give me a chance to show my innocence," he said. "And if you're not comfortable with an acquittal, then extend this process and get more evidence, if you can get it, to show that I did something wrong or give me a chance to bring my evidence in."
Some said that Rod Blagojevich's media tour this week did nothing to help him, but instead hurt him. After all, if he had time to appear on The Today Show, why not in front of the Senate?
Blagojevich, a two-term Democratic governor, was arrested on federal corruption charges in December. Charges brought against him included an attempt to "sell" or "trade" the seat of then President-Elect Barack Obama.
