Six Elected to NFL Hall of Fame

Six new entrants were elected to the NFL Hall of Fame today, including two, Bruce Smith and Rod Woodson, in their first year of eligibility.

Bruce Smith, a defensive end, holds the career sack title with 200 sacks overall, and was named defensive player of the year in 1990 and 1996 with Buffalo. He played 16 years with them and 3 with Washington.

Bruce Smith also holds the record for the most seasons with double-digit sacks (13) and the most postseason sacks (14 1/2).

Rod Woodson was a defensive back and played CB and S with the Steelers, 49ers, Ravens and Raiders in a 17-season career. IN 1991 he won the Super Bowl with Baltimore and he also reached Super Bowls with Pittsburgh and Oakland.

Rod Woodson was also the 1993 defensive player of the year.

Also elected to the NFL Hall of Fame were longtime Bills owner Ralph Wilson; former Minnesota guard Randall McDaniel; the late Chiefs LB Derrick Thomas; and the late Bob Hayes, the 1964 Olympic 100 meters gold medalist who later became a WR for the Dallas Cowboys.

Derrick Thomas died from severe injuries sustained in an auto accident in 2000. Bob Hayes died in 2002 of kidney failure after battling prostate cancer and liver ailments.
