Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg underwent surgery on Thursday for early stage pancreatic cancer. She is 75.

Ginsburg had the surgery at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. According to a release issued by the court, she will remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg is the only woman currently on the Supreme Court. She has been a justice since 1993, and in 1999 underwent treatment for colon cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is often considered a death sentence unless caught extremely early. It is one of the most deadly cancers: fewer than 5 percent survive five years.

According to the information provided by the court, the cancer was caught early.

There have only been two women Supreme Court justices in its history: Ginsburg and Sandra Day O'Connor, who retired in 2006.
