Go Red For Women on Wear Red Day

Feb. 6 is Wear Red Day, part of the Go Red for Women, campaign organized by the American Heart Association to promote awareness of the dangers of heart disease to women. It's a day when (as it sounds) supporters are to wear red.

Many believe that women, at least through menopause, are protected from heart disease by their hormones. While that is true to an extent, heart disease is the #1 killer of women, causing more deaths than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.

The idea of the day is to wear red, showing your support for the Go Red for Women campaign, whether it be a red blouse, skirt, dress, or hey guys, you can wear a red shirt, too!

Some interesting stats from the Go Red for Women Day site:

Women who called 9-1-1 complaining of cardiac symptoms were 52 percent more likely than men to experience delays during emergency medical services’ (EMS) care. The data did not reveal why women were more likely to be delayed, but other research suggests heart conditions may not be recognized as readily, thus leading to slower response times.

Men and women have about the same adjusted in-hospital death rate for heart attack — but women are more likely to die if hospitalized for a more severe type of heart attack, according to a report in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

So if you haven't chosen your outfit for the day, wear soemthing red, and Go Red for Women.
