Obama vs. Helen Thomas, Round 1: Obama

President Barack Obama faced down with the Grand Dame of White House Press Correspondents, taking his first question from Helen Thomas, calling it "an inaugural moment."

Helen Thomas didn't make her first questions easy, asking about whether Pakistan and Afghanistan were havens for terrorists, but also asking if any Middle East country had nuclear weapons.

That is, of course, a loaded question, as Helen Thomas clearly knows. The only Middle East country with nuclear weapons is Isreal. Of course, no U.S. President, not even Barack Obama will or has admitted that.

And in this case, Barack Obama did not address the issue either. Rather he simply avoided the issue.

Helen Thomas interrupted him during his answer, but he still didn't respond to it. Knowing the Grand Dame of the White House Press Corps, that won't be the end of it.

#1 nuclear weapons

It's certainly true that Israel is a nuclear power never mentioned as such by the U. S. A. But they are not the only mideast power with Nuclear weapons if Pakistan is counted. Unless you want to count Pakistan as east, rather than mideast, which makes sense. I think, however, our government thinks of them as mideast.
