Pick Up Some Forever Stamps: Postage Increase A-Coming

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced on Wednesday that the price of a first-class stamp will rise from 42 cents to 44 cents on May 11, four months from now.

The USPS lost almost $3 billion last year and this year it is expected to be at least as bad, as private citizens and even businesses move away from snail mail. Those who are cost-conscious, however, should not forget about Forever Stamps.

Forever Stamps are, as the name implies, good forever. You buy them at price X and even if the current first class postage rate is 100x that much, they will still be valid.

You'll recall that recently the Postal Service discussed possibly ending six-day delivery. Saturday was the obvious first choice, but it's possible, if this initiative goes through, that they might pick another day, one with light mail.

Considering that most of the mail I get is junk mail or magazines, I'm not sure I want to stock up heavily on a new batch of Forever Stamps, but I will pick up some.

Additional info: for first class mail, additional ounces will stay the same at 17 cents per extra ounce.

Postcard stamps will increase to 27 cents (a 1 cent increase)

The first ounce of a parcel will increase to $1.22 (a 5 cent increase)

The first ounce of a large envelope will increase to 88 cents (a 5 cent increase).
