Google Earth 5.0, or rather its new Google Ocean oceanographic feature, might have found Atlantis. At least that's what aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford hoped when he found this grid pattern of lines (above) in the ocean floor, at the coordinates N31.381 W24.375. But all hopes were dashed, by Google.
No, although the gridlines seem to be streetlike (shades of the canals of Mars!), it turns out that it would mean Atlantis would have been the size of Wales (first strike against it). But Google, in a statement, said the following:
"It's true that many amazing discoveries have been made in Google Earth, including a pristine forest in Mozambique that is home to previously unknown species and the remains of an ancient Roman villa. In this case, however, what users are seeing is an artifact of the data collection process. Bathymetric (or sea floor terrain) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea floor. The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data."
Dang! The location "surveyed" was supposedly near one of the proposed locations for the lost civilization of Atlantis. Thus, there was even more hope.
Atlantis was a legendary island first mentioned in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias. According to Plato, Atlantis sank to the bottom of the ocean in around 9600 BC. It was an supposedly advanced civilization with advanced technology and a highly developed society.
While many believe it to be myth, there are many who still believe it actually existed, and still search for it to this day.
