The U.S. Attorney's office suggested in a brief court filing on Friday that Bernie Madoff is ready to waive a formal grand jury review (an indictment). Usually that sort of language is used when a plea deal is close.
Under the speedy-trials laws, prosecutors would have had a deadline of next Friday to bring an indictment against Bernie Madoff.
No further details on a possible plea deal were revealed.
However, according to NBC, Bernie Madoff may plead guilty as early as next week. He would be required to serve prison time (a lot, I hope) as well as required to help the government put together a report of what happened.
For those unaware, Bernie Madoff is, or was, the "king" of a Ponzi scheme that collapsed late last year. As the recession droned on, investors wanted their money, and withdrawals of money from such a pyramid scheme are what usually bring them down.
Quite a few famous people were victims of the scam, including John Malkovich, Sandy Koufax, Kevin Bacon and more.
