The problem with trying to turn an expansive, thought-provoking series such as Watchmen into a movie, even one that runs 2 hours and 41 minutes, is the simple fact that there's too much content to cover in a normal movie.
But can director Zack Snyer ("300") pull it off?
Reviews of are a mixed bag.
One review said Watchmen should never have been made into a movie, that the story is too nuanced and deep to emerge from a comic book page, where it can be instantly read and re-read.
Another review calls Watchmen a "true epic."
Yet another says Watchmen lacks imagination, because the director does not stray far from the material.
No less than Roger Ebert says that Watchmen ia a "a compelling visceral film."
What do I think? I think that if you loved the graphic novel, you should give Watchmen the movie a chance. Indeed the reviews are mixed, but I think that's because the material is indeed so complex.
And if you haven't read the graphic novel, you may find the end quite surprising, sort of a "Sixth Sense" gotcha.
If nothing else, the image of a nude, blue demi-god (Dr. Manhattan) oughta be worth your money.
