Actor Ron Silver, a veteran of television and movies, has died after a long battle with esophageal cancer. He was 62.

Born in 1946 as Ronald Zimelman, Silver died on Sunday.

Ron Silver won a Tony theatre award in 1988 for his performance in David Mamet's play Speed the Plow. But he is probably better known for his recurring role as Bruno Gianelli on The West Wing and for his role as lawyer Alan Dershowitz in the 1990 film Reversal of Fortune, starring Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons.

Reversal of Fortune recounted the tale of Claus and Sunny von Bulow, for those who do not recall.

Once a Democrat, after 9/11 he supported the so-called "war on terror," and shifted to the right, although he said it cost him some jobs.

“It’s affected me very badly. I can’t point to a person or a job I’ve lost, but this community is not very pluralistic. I haven’t worked for 10 months.”

The Creative Coalition, which Silver helped create, told the New York Post:

"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him this morning. He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years and his family is making arrangements for a private service."
