Dell introduced the Adamo at CES (sort of), but didn't give many details, with the exception of the fact that Adamo means "to fall in love with" in Latin. we didn't know much. But as of now, the Dell Adamo is here, and pre-orderable, and according to Dell, it's the world's thinnest laptop.

But more than that, Adamo is a brand, not just a single product. That's something to keep in mind. something that Dell keeps emphasizing.

The Adamo sports a chassis milled from a single piece of aluminum featuring precision detailing and a scalloped backlit keyboard. Does that sound like anything MacBook-ish to anyone?

Additionally, the Adamo will have a 13.4"16:9 high definition edge-to-edge glass display, a thin 0.65-inch profile and a weight of just four pounds. Even the cooling vents are ... well, cool looking, almost grill-like.

Spec-wise:

  • Intel® Core 2 Duo processors with Intel® Centrino ® technology
  • 13.03" x 9.5" x .65 inches (331mm x 242mm x 16.39 mm) W x D x H
  • 4 pounds (not including adapter)
  • Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset
  • DDR3 system memory
  • 13.4-inch 16:9 HD display
  • Draft-Wireless N
  • High-performance solid state drives standard
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • Mobile Broadband option
  • Up to 5+ hours of battery life (preliminary testing)
  • Integrated Intel GMX4500 Graphics
  • 2 USB ports, 1 USB/eSATA combo port, Display Port, RJ-45 port
  • Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-bit
  • Available in Onyx and Pearl colors with a broad range of complementary accessories
  • Price starting at $1999

One thing to note is that the integrated Intel graphics put the Adamo at a major disadvantage compared to the NVIDIA graphics in the MacBook Air.

By the way, when they say complimentary accessories, they mean color-wise. The catalog of accessories includes:

  • External storage option with 250GB or 500GB external hard drive.
  • External DVD+/-RW or Blu-ray disc drive.
  • 8GB USB drive.
  • Connectors and cables including DisplayPort to HDMI, DVI, and VGA.

Also (U.S. only), you even have access to an exclusive line of bags from TUMI.

You also get Adamo Premium Service (again U.S. only, sorry) which means 24/7 access to Dell's best trained technicians, and consistent communication with a dedicated personal team.

The bad thing about this announcement: Dell chose a really bad day for announcing Dell Adamo. Once 10 AM PDT rolls around, all talk will be about the iPhone OS 3.0, and the Adamo will be lost in the excitement over Apple's announcement.

Oh, well. Enjoy thinking Adamo until then!
