It was a minor upset, but an upset still. And finally, on this Saturday of second-round NCAA games, we had a close game. Until this one, they had all been blowouts. Purdue defeated Washington 76-74 that went down to the wire.

In fact, Purdue had to hold off a frantic comeback by Washington. The Boilermakers (27-9) led the entire game, but nearly blew a 14-point lead to the Washington Huskies.

JaJuan Johnson scored 22 points and had two huge blocks in the final minute. E’Twaun Moore scored 14 points and made the clinching free throws with 5.5 seconds remaining.

This advances Purdue to its first regional semifinals since 2000, where it will meet Connecticut, who beat Texas A&M in a blowout earlier.

For Washington (26-9), Isaiah Thomas scored 24 points, Quincy Pondexter 20 and 10 rebounds and Jon Brockman had 20 points with 18 rebounds, yet they couldn't quite catch the Boilermakers at the end.
