In fact, as I live in the SF Bay Area, I know exactly where this incident took place. The events of the day started with a traffic stop at 73rd and Hillside in East Oakland at around 1 PM.
This part of Oakland, close to MacArthur Blvd, lies in the center of the most crime-ridden portion of the Bay Area.
Two motorcycle officers were shot at the stop, while the gunman fled and police closed off the surrounding streets to traffic. Dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies participated in an intense search.
Two hours later, the suspect barricaded himself in an apartment building at Hillside Street and 74th Avenue, and the SWAT team went in. Two other offices were shot, while the suspect, who whom police believe was acting alone, was killed.
One of the two officers at the second incident died, bringing the total dead to three. The other is in critical condition. A fifth officer was released with minor injuries.
The last time an Oakland officer was killed was in 2004 when William Seuis, 39, died in a hit-and-run crash. No one could remember when three officers were shot in the line of duty on the same day.
