The fourth Oakland police officer, who had been listed in critical condition after Saturday's tragic shootings, has died, according to authorities.
Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said on Sunday Officer John Hege, 41, died at Highland Hospital in Oakland.
The events began with an approximately 1 PM traffic stop of Lovelle Mixon by Hege and fellow officer Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40. Dunakin was killed, and Hege mortally wounded.
Mixon fled on foot, leading officers to cordon off surrounding streets. Later that afternoon, police received a tip that Mixon was holed up in an apartment building at 74th Avenue near Hillside Street.
A SWAT team was shot at by Mixon when they entered an apartment to clear and search it. Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35, were killed and a third officer was grazed by a bullet during that incident.
Oakland police said the four officers' deaths were the most ever in a single day in the department's history. Mayor Ron Dellums:
"It's in these moments that words are extraordinarily inadequate."
Mixon had two weapons, according to police, inclulding an assault rifle used at the second crime scene.
Oakland police Deputy Chief Jeffery Israel said:
"(Mixon) was on parole and he had a warrant out for his arrest for violating that parole. And he was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon."
