A friend of mine tuned me into this site, saying it was featured on the Early Show today. A little research and I discovered that missingmoney.com was also highlighted last year on MSNBC.com. It purports to help you search for funds you may have forgotten about.
How could this happen? I mean, how could you have cash out there just waiting to be picked up? Well, as it could be an old bank account or some forgotten stock in a stock broker account you thought you closed, something like that. missingmoney.com aims to help you find that missing cash.
Of course, states have this sort of thing too. Frequently you can go to the state treasurer's site and find a search engine there as well. But assuming you've moved around a bit, you can see that could be a hassle. missingmoney.com can check many states at once.
Unfortunately, the site (missingmoney.com) doesn't have every state covered. You can check their list of states here. And they're missing the most populous state of all, California!
Interestingly, that same state page shows you the addresses of treasurers, etc. so that you can claim anything found. This leads to the question of, just how does missingmoney.com make any money itself?
To be honest, I have no idea. missingmoney.com didn't find any matches for me.
But keep in mind, there are plenty of these sorts of sites around if you just google for them. missingmoney.com isn't the only one, but in these recessionary times, it can't hurt to try at least one of them.
