Mt. Redoubt Erupts Twice on Thursday

Alaska's Mt. Redoubt has been rumbling and grumbling for some time now, and erupted Sunday night, but on Thursday the volcano erupted twice, tossing a more than 12-mile-high cloud of ash into the sky.

The first eruption occurred at about 8:30 AM with an ash cloud about 30,000 feet shot in the air, and the second eruption was about an hour later. The second eruption sent ash 65,000 feet highThe larger eruption caused a mud flow into the Drift River near the base of Mt. Redoubt.

Local weather services have forecast that Mt. Redoubt ashfall is not expected to reach Anchorage. Yes, they forecast ashfall, like rainfall.

According to reports, as many as 19 flights from Anchorage International Airport, 100 mi. NE of Mt. Redoubt, have been cancelled.

Possible ashfall has caused Elmendorf AFB to relocate some aircraft, as well, moving them to McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma, Wash.
