The New York Giants announced on Friday that they have released troubled WR Plaxico Burress, four months after he accidentally shot himself in the leg.
Obviously, it is bad enough that he shot himself in the leg, but he did so at a NYC nightclub, and carrying a weapon without a NY gun permit.
Plaxico Burress was with the Giants for four years, highlighted by a game-winning TD catch in the February 2008 Super Bowl against the previously undefeated New England Patriots. However, it was also marked by fines and suspensions.
If convicted of the weapons charge, Burress could face at least 3 1/2 years in prison.
As I've previously written, celebrities and sports stars seem to feel a sense of entitlement, that they can do anything they want to. Carrying a gun without a weapons permit would be such an example.
Giants general manager Jerry Reese said:
“I am an optimist, and I believe most situations can be worked out. We hung in there as long as we could in hopes that there could be a resolution to this situation other than the decision we made today to release Plaxico.
“It wasn’t to be, so now we have to move on. Like everybody else here, we want nothing but the best for Plaxico, and we are appreciative of the contributions he made to this franchise.”
Besides the action taken by the Giants, the NFL could also suspend Burress, as they did with Michael Vick, thus preventing him from playing for any team.
Burress’ case was adjourned on Tuesday while a possible plea agreement is discussed. He is due back in court on June 15.
