Material Girl to Appeal Malawi Court Adoption Rejection

On Friday a judge rejected the attempt by Madonna to adopt a second child from Malawi, saying she would not bend the country’s strict residency rules even for a wealthy celebrity.

I have to admit, it's nice to see someone finally stand up to a celebrity. As I've previously said, most celebrities have a sense of entitlement.

Despite that fact that the law is the law, Madonna plans to appeal the ruling against her adoption of 3-year-old Chifundo “Mercy” James.

Malawi law requires prospective adoptive parents to live in the country for 18 to 24 months while child welfare authorities assess their suitability. That rule was obviously ignored when Madonna was allowed to take her now 3-year-old son David to London in 2006 before his adoption was finalized two years later.

Madonna has two other children, Lourdes, 12, and Rocco, 8.

Judge Esme Chombo said:

“It is necessary that we look beyond the petitioner ... and consider the consequences of opening the doors too wide. By removing the very safeguard that is supposed to protect our children, the courts ... could actually facilitate trafficking of children by some unscrupulous individuals.”

Madonna has set up a major development project in Malawi, which could be the reason for political figures in the county giving support to her adoption bid.
