While U.S. automakers General Motors and Chrysler continue to lobby Congress for more funds they, and other manufacturers are making appearances at the New York International Auto Show 2009, though in a decidedly non-festive mood.

Some, including Congress, might see the show as "more of the same," however. Chrysler unveiled a new SUV, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee at the 2009 New York International Auto Show on Wednesday, but the Fiat 500 that brought Chrysler President Jim Press to the stage drew more attention.

Obviously, Chrysler was using that as a statement of a possible merger with Fiat, which is something Barack Obama stated had to be done to keep Chrysler solvent.

"Wouldn't that make a great new company car?" Press said as he stepped out of the vehicle. "We're dreaming about the possibilities for the future."

Other news from the show is the Scion iQ, which at less than 3 meters (9.8 feet) long is smaller than Toyota’s Yaris subcompact. It's said to get 54 MPG in Japanese emissions form.

More news: Stefan Jacoby, president and chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America, was the keynote speaker at the 2009 New York International Auto Show's annual breakfast for the press. He lobbied for clean diesel over electric and hybrid technology this morning.

Mercedes is showing what it calls the Vision E250 BlueTEC concept, a 44 MPG 4 cylinder diesel.

Finally, there's GM's PUMA, which was shown off yesterday, which incorporates Segway technology into a GM partner vehicle.

The 2009 New York International Auto Show opens to the public on April 10.
