Tornadoes Flatten Parts of the Southeast

A tornado touched down in Tennessee on Friday, killing a woman and her 9-week-old baby, while another touched down in southwestern Kentucky, injuring two people and destroying homes.

The Tennessee storm system was the same one that three in western Arkansas on Thursday.

Kori Bryant, in her mid-20s, and her 9-week-old Olivia daughter were identified as the dead. Additionally, at least 41 people were hurt in Rutherford County, Tenn., four of them critically.

In Kentucky, two people were injured when their homes were destroyed.

In the aftermath of Thursday's tornado, Mena, Ark. was "devastated," according to a reporter.

Roger Susanin, a reporter for KATV in Little Rock, said:

"It came out at about 8:30 p.m. People had described it like a bomb."

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe declared three counties disaster areas. Fifty Arkansas National Guardsmen are now in the Mena area helping with search-and-rescue operations.
