Melissa Huckaby Arrested in Sandra Cantu Murder

Sunday School teacher Melissa Huckaby, 28, has been arrested in the kidnapping and murder of Sandra Cantu in Tracy, CA.

Details are scarce. Besides being a Sunday School teacher at the Clover Road Baptist Church, Melissa Huckaby is the granddaughter of the pastor of the church. That church was searched by authorities for a second time Friday in connection with the case.

Sandra Cantu, in case you do not know, was an 8-year-old Tracy girl whose body was found 10 days after she disappeared, stuffed into a suitcase and dumped in a farm pond.

Local TV station CBS 5 said the following:

Melissa Huckaby had told CBS 5 that Sandra visited her home March 27, the day she disappeared, to play with her 5-year-old daughter. Huckaby also said she had left a suitcase in the driveway that day, and that it was missing. Melissa Huckaby went in for an interview with police on Friday. Police Sgt. Tony Sheneman said:

"She gave enough information to us during the course of the interview that probable cause was there to arrest her."

Interesting historical notes: Melissa Huckaby was convicted by Superior Court in Los Angeles County in November of 2006 for a petty theft in Bellflower. She was also recently convicted for petty theft in San Joaquin County. Finally, she was scheduled to appear in court on April 17 as part of a three-year probation sentence. She was required to check in with a county mental health program.
