In protest of the U.N. Security Council's condemnation of the country's rocket launch, North Korea has vowed to restore its nuclear facilities and boycott the Six-Party nuclear disarmament talks.
The launch, which North Korea asserts was a successful satellite launch but which the U.N. states was a long-range missile test, occurred on April 5th.
North Korea said:
“There would be no need to hold six-party talks which the D.P.R.K. has attended, as they have turned into a platform for infringing upon the sovereignty of the D.P.R.K. and seeking to force the D.P.R.K. to disarm itself.”
North Korea calls itself the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, or D.P.R.K.
Daniel A. Pinkston, a senior analyst in Seoul for the International Crisis Group, a non-governmental organization committed to conflict prevention said:
“The statement is unfortunate and a cause for serious concern, but it’s not a great surprise. It makes things much more difficult in trying to walk back and stop the escalation. Apparently they are dissatisfied with a number of things and the succession issue may be tied into that.”
Chinese foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a press conference in Beijing:
"We hope the relevant parties will proceed from the overall interest, exercise calmness and restraint."
