New York Archbishop-designate Timothy Dolan to Challenge Gay Marriage

New York Archbishop-designate Timothy Dolan, who is succeeding Cardinal Edward Egan (retiring after nine years), says he will challenge any same-sex marriage proposal put forth by the state of New York.

Tomorrow, New York Gov. David Paterson is expected to propose a same-sex marriage bill. While Dolan would challenge that bill, Paterson is still expected to be among the civic leaders expected at Dolan's installation Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Paterson's bill is the same bill that died in 2007 and opponents are vowing to kill it again. The bill passed the NY state assembly, but died in the state senate, controlled at the time by the GOP.

However, in last November's elections the Democrats gained a 32-30 majority. Despite that, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, who supports the measure, still doesn't believe there are enough votes to pass it, according to a spokesperson.

Dolan is the 59-year-old former archbishop of Milwaukee.

#1 I knew this was coming.

I live in Milwaukee at teach at a Catholic School. I know all about Dolan, and knew he'd be up to this. It's actually quite unfortunate. He's an ultraconservative that will obey the Vatican without question.
